2013 Canned Food Drive

2013 School Canned Food Drive September 23 - October 4I_Can_SHIELD_website

Hello Canned Food Drive Coordinator:

First - THANK YOU for joining us in our fight against hunger. This year will be another year filled with the need of some of our communities most vulnerable populations. I hope together we can meet that need with the canned food items you collect! The current record is from 2006 when we collected 141,214 cans which equated to 2.5 cans per participating student. I think that we can reach the goal of 100,000 cans if we all work together.

The following items can be downloaded to help facilitat your drive:

  • Parent letter - ready for duplication, to be sent home with each student. en español
  • Canned food poster - ready for duplication, to be displayed around school and in the classroom. en español
  • Daily calendar - to document each day’s food collections. To be eligible for the canned food drive contest the deadline for sending your totals to us will be October 19th.
  • Speaker reservation & video request form - to reserve Captain Can Good (Elementary only) or another speaker to address your students and get them motivated and to reserve your copy of the food drive video.
  • Suggestion sheet - from previous winning schools to give staff ideas on how to make the most of this year’s drive.

Speaker Support:

If you’d like, you can arrange to have a representative from The Salvation Armyspeak to the students. We also have Captain Can Goodavailable to visit Elementary Schools to help encourage student participation. Please complete the enclosed speaker reservation form and fax or email your speaker preferences to us. We will schedule speakers based on first contact, first served.

Promotional Video:

Both of our videos can be viewed on YouTube. Captain Can Good or Promotional. We have available for your use a short Captain Can Good DVD for Elementary Schools and another DVD for Middle & High Schools (these are the same videos that was distributed last year so if you still have that one, please continue to use it.) These videos can be used in individual class rooms or played to the entire school during announcements. If you would like to reserve a copy please indicate this on the form and send back to us as soon as possible.

Award_Event_2010_040How We Determine Awards:

No matter the size of your enrollment, your school can be a contender. Winning schools are determined by total cans collected divided by the total number of students. The only stipulation is that all cans must be counted and the counts forwarded to our office no later than 5pm on October 9th.

Students_In_Front_of_TruckPick-Up Day/Collecting the Cans from Your School:

      • Once all schools have responded we will begin to create the pickup schedule. Please look for this schedule to be sent to you soon.
      • Once the food drive concludes, please email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with your school’s grand total or fax in the can count to 239-278-9028.
      • Please have food items ready for our driver to pick up on or before October 4th. It’s best if items are counted and packed in boxes as they are collected.
      • If possible, please prepare the pickup station in the following manner:

      • Please pack only small boxes.
      • Keep all boxes to no more than 30 pounds each.
      • No large boxes please, our drivers will need to carry each box.
      • The boxes from a case of paper are the best to use, but any box of this size or smaller can be used.
      • DO NOT remove labels. We cannot distribute food without labels and these cans will just be thrown in the trash.

      • Separate food items if possible, this will greatly assist our volunteer sorters and packers.
      • Label boxes by category (e.g., meats, vegetables, fruits, etc.)
      • These are not required steps.

Please call us at 239-278-1551 x 210 if you have any questions.
